Home Safety Checklist for Older Adults to Promote Independent Living

Author: Mark Johnson

A quick guide to keeping your living space safe, secure, and hazard-free.

Security & Scam Prevention

  • Locks & Visitors: Keep exterior doors/windows locked. Use a door chain or peephole before opening.
  • Spare Keys: Leave keys with a trusted neighbour or in a combination lockbox—never under mats or pots.
  • Information: Never give financial details over the phone or at the door. If in doubt, hang up.
  • Lighting: Use motion-sensor outdoor lights near entrances and pathways.

Hazard & Fall Prevention

  • Clear Pathways: Remove floor clutter, loose extension cords, and low furniture from walkways.
  • Secure Rugs: Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing or double-sided tape.
  • Bathroom: Install grab bars by the toilet and shower. Use non-slip mats inside the tub.
  • Stairs & Shoes: Ensure handrails are secure on both sides. Wear supportive, non-skid footwear indoors.
  • Kitchen: Place daily items on waist or chest-height shelves to avoid climbing on stools.
  • Nightlights: Plug in nightlights along hallways, stairs, and bathrooms.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Fire Safety: Test smoke and CO detectors monthly. Keep a fire blanket near the stove.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a large-print phone list (family, doctor, 999/101) by the phone and fridge.
  • Medical Card: Place a list of medications and allergies near the front door for first responders.
  • Alarms & Phone: Wear a fall-detection alert pendant and keep a charged phone within reach overnight.
